Poonam (14) happily announces her imminent marriage during a break at her school in Nepal. As her friends share stories of other girls’ terrible marriages, it suddenly dawns on Poonam that she knows nothing about her future husband or in-laws. All she knows is that, in a few days, she will move into their home and must abide by their rules. How will she secure her place in her new family? She cries during the wedding as she leaves her mother. Nine months later, she fulfills both her own and her husband’s family’s expectations by giving birth to a baby boy. Fortunately, she falls in love with her husband, who turns out to be a great partner, allowing her to still be the teenage girl she is.
The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that were central to cultural interaction connecting the East and West. It created curiosity among cultures, for example with tea and silk from China suddenly sold in Venice. The trading may be a thing of the past, but the culture is still there… We chose the Silk Road because we want to show the kids how colorful the world is and to create understanding and curiosity of the different cultures. What if we all had less prejudice and more curiosity? Would the world be more colorful and less hierarchical? Would there be more empathy? Could we in the West try to learn from other cultures?

Thanks for subscribing & sharing your comments! KAVI is a young boy in India who wants to play cricket and go to school, but instead he’s forced to make bricks as a modern-day slave. NOTE: Play at full volume or use headphones
Over 100+ festivals worldwide and 50+ awards.
"KAVI tugs at the heartstrings." - ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
"Remarkably incisive and moving. " - THE LOS ANGELES TIMES
"A highly sophisticated and gripping film." - Randal Kleiser, Director of GREASE
"I was stunned by the realism... KAVI was moving, heartbreaking, and even beautiful" - Kevin Tent, Editor of SIDEWAYS, THE DESCENDANTS, NEBRASKA, ABOUT SCHMIDT
“KAVI is intimate and visually beautiful. Itʼs both a socially and dramatically powerful film -- two elements that rarely come together in short films.” -- Thomas Ethan Harris, veteran festival programmer
KAVI is Gregg Helvey's USC thesis film that won the Student Academy Award gold medal for Best Narrative Short Film, and then got nominated for an Oscar in the Best Live Action category. In addition to playing at 100+ film festivals around the world, KAVI has been used by many anti-slavery organizations to raise awareness and fundraise to help end slavery (IJM, CAST, Dalit Freedom Network, etc). KAVI was also used in California Senate to help pass The Transparency in Supply Chains Bill (SB657) for Anti-slavery & Human Trafficking.
Gregg spent several years screening the film, partnering with anti-slavery organizations and speaking about modern-day slavery. The film has been screened for schools, churches, synagogues, law enforcement, governments and other organizations as an educational, inspirational and motivational movie to help viewers (ranging from children to adults) understand and empathize with the social justice issue of child slavery/bonded-labor slavery.
It was shot entirely on location in India, in Hindi (although Gregg, the writer/director, does not speak Hindi). The location was 4 hours east of Mumbai in Wai, India, near Pune. It has been praised by Indian audiences as a powerful movie that does justice to the pressing issue child labor and indentured servitude.

More About "The Moths Will Eat Them Up":
With The Moths Will Eat Them Up, we've crafted a psychological thriller that confronts the terror of gendered violence and the complicity of male bystanders. Inspired by personal experience and years of work in violence prevention, the film immerses viewers in the pervasive fears women face when traveling alone at night. Through this, we aim to illuminate themes of hope and collective strength, utilising the thriller genre to both entertain and deliver a timely societal commentary.

More About "The Dinner After":
An exhausted and guilt-stricken ANGELA, visits her parents for what at first seems like a fairly routine family dinner. Yet as the dinner progresses something feels off. Angela’s parents seem awkward and confused. Her Mother extremely upset over the smallest of things. Whist her Father who seems oblivious, keeps calling her by her sister’s name, who isn’t present at the dinner. A tension fills the room. As the dinner progresses, it becomes apparent that this is the first time Angela has seen both her parents after getting involved in a car accident which killed her younger sister, LAUREN, a few months ago. Details of this traumatic event, gradually creeps through into the conversation - fuelling Angela’s guilt. Angela does her best to evade this topic, as she’s unable to face her grief. However, her parents won’t let go of the subject and the dinner quickly becomes more and more nightmarish. The awkward dinner descends into a surreal horror, as Angela tries to escape the house. But these attempts to outrun her grief are futile, as she collapses through a doorway which transports her back to the day of the accident. She wakes up inside an upturned car, where she’s forced to confront the physical manifestation of her guilt... a demonic version of her dead sister.
